Lead-Free Brass in Europe: The Regulatory Clock Is Already Running

The short answer: Europe is phasing leaded brass out of drinking-water contact by law, on fixed dates. Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/367 sets the EU positive list of materials under the recast Drinking Water Directive, and it applies from 31 December 2026. The silicon-brass grade CW724R (CuZn21Si3P) is on the list, with an entry valid to 2034. The workhorse machinable grades CW614N and CW617N are not on the list in their standard compositions — only their low-lead “-DW” variants get a transitional path, and Germany ends that path for new installations on 12 January 2028.

The dates that matter

Date What happens
31 Dec 2026 (EU) 2024/367 positive list applies: materials in contact with drinking water must be listed
12 Jan 2028 Germany stops accepting -DW low-lead variants for new installations
2034 Current positive-list entry for CW724R runs to this year

What this means in the market

Every European maker of valves, fittings, meters and connectors has to re-qualify alloys, tooling and machining parameters. Lead is what made CW614N/CW617N cheap to machine; removing it raises cost and scrap rates. Market reports put the price premium of lead-free brass semis at roughly 10–30% over conventional grades — treat that as an indication, not a quote.

Where the supply gap is

European mills already sell CW724R, including hollow bar for fittings production. On the Chinese side, lead-free silicon-brass solid bar exists in mill grade lists, but we find no Chinese mill openly offering lead-free hollow bar — the product form European fitting makers buy most. That gap, plus the qualification work (material certs, EN 10204 documentation, drinking-water approvals), is exactly where the trade will be won or lost over the next two years.

Brassburg tracks this transition and matches Chinese supply with European demand. If you make lead-free bar — solid or hollow — or you buy it, write to [email protected].
